Symptom: When updating OfficeConnect, you see:

An error occurred while downloading the update. Details: The underlying connection
was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send.

Common causes and fixes

Cause 1: Network or proxy blocking the update

Your corporate network or proxy may be blocking the update download.

Fix: Work with your IT team to allowlist the Workday update servers. Alternatively, download the latest installer manually from Product Downloads in Workday and install it directly — bypassing the auto-update.

Open Excel and click the OfficeConnect tab The OfficeConnect tab appears in the Excel ribbon after installation.

Open the Help menu In the OfficeConnect tab, click the Help drop-down.

Click About The About dialog shows your current version number (e.g., 2026.104.3019.3004).

OfficeConnect version numbers follow the pattern YYYY.release.weekday.build, where weekday encodes the week and day of the build.

Workday ships OfficeConnect alongside Adaptive Planning releases on a roughly six-month cadence (R1 in spring, R2 in fall). Each release ships a new OfficeConnect client, and the older client is blocked at sign-in after a grace period.

Forced-upgrade grace periods

Each release has a grace period during which the prior client can still sign in. After the grace ends, the older client is blocked.
